Job Title: Packaging Manager

Department: Packaging

Reports To: Executive Director of Packaging

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY

The Packaging Manager oversees the activities of the packaging rooms and facility to ensure that safety and quality standards and packaging KPI targets are achieved. The Packaging Manager shall fully comply with and enforce all regulatory / cGMP guidelines, responsible for developing, implementing and enforcing programs, policies and procedures to maintain compliance, and Legacy Pharmaceutical Packaging standards and policies. He/she insures proper staffing and skill set levels as well as providing appropriate leadership, coaching/mentorship and discipline in executing the production plan and facility objectives. In Executive Direct of Packaging's absence, provides organizational backup and facility oversight. This may include direct responsibility for off shift operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Provides comprehensive formal and informal leadership to promote a positive work environment and communicate overall business expectations to the plant working groups.
  2. Communicates with each stakeholder with respect and dignity.
  3. Demonstrates dependability and a commitment to the organization and team by maintaining an acceptable attendance record.
  4. Ensures that all personnel adhere to safety policies and procedures. Fosters a safety culture that is driven by hazard recognition and mitigation.
  5. Works with team members to identify potential hazards or safety risks to employees and proactively implements corrective actions to mitigate the hazards or risks.
  6. Promotes and enforces GMP and SOP compliance in a FDA regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment, ensuring product integrity, safety and compliance with standards.
  7. Develops and leads a cross functional team consisting of production, maintenance, quality and warehouse employees.
  8. Schedules and manages production staff to maximize output for the plant's operations.
  9. Works effectively with appropriate departments to plan and execute master production schedule. Communicates effectively to ensure schedule adherence.
  10. Ensures all shift paperwork and batch record audits are completed in a timely and accurate manner. This includes proper calculating and reporting of performance metrics and reporting of downtime.
  11. Leads and participates in making line improvements and promote a team environment within the packaging group.
  12. Promotes open and collaborative work environment with all peers and subordinates.
  13. Employs effective conflict resolution skills to ensure that a team-centered environment exists between all levels of employees and all functional areas.
  14. Assists in training of other employees and taking ownership of production areas.
  15. Consistently demonstrates effective performance management skills to provide direct reports with 1) clear job performance expectations and objectives; 2) the tools and training necessary to demonstrate successful job performance; and 3) a high level of accountability and the effective employment of performance management techniques.
  16. Possess a working knowledge of cGMPs, FDA and DEA regulations and Legacy Pharmaceutical Packaging policies and procedures. Ensure that the company is compliant.
  17. Leads and participates in continuous improvement activities, including leadership of 5S and kaizen events. Works with management to develop and execute continuous improvement of the production processes.
  18. Works diligently to identify and reduce wastes in process to optimize efficiencies and to drive down operating expenses; including major and minor changeovers.
  19. Manages labor to ensure that PTO absences are covered with the appropriate staffing to keep rooms in production.
  20. Accurately edits employee time cards and ensures that attendance is accurately tracked for direct reports.
  21. Performs investigations, authors deviations, and completes all other documentation required by company procedures and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with customer requirements and regulatory agencies.
  22. Attends and actively participates in mandatory meetings and events.
  23. Perform other duties and attend meetings as required by management.
  24. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet departmental and Company objectives.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for the compliance, accuracy and timeliness of responsibilities and work assigned.
  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for setting expectations, employee engagement/training, and the performance management of team members.
  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for the enforcement of compliance requirements, including cGMP, housekeeping and documentation.
  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for accuracy in tracking the attendance of team members and issuing the appropriate corrective actions according to Legacy attendance policies.
  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for achieving or exceeding KPI targets and operating expenses, including labor.
  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for ensuring that production standards for output, changeover cleanings, labor and waste are meeting company goals/ targets.
  • The Packaging Manager shall be held accountable for developing and maintaining a capable, motivated team of which positive communication and customer-centricity are a part of the team norms and culture. Developing and maintaining the team includes the ensuring that team members complete documented training to be proficient at his or her job tasks.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct supervision of shift supervisors, team leaders, line leads and packaging department employees. Indirect supervision of personnel in support functions, such as maintenance, quality, or warehouse.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science or Arts degree preferred. Will consider a combination of experience and education in lieu of a 4-year degree.
  • Lean Six Sigma certified (Green Belt minimum; Black Belt preferred)
  • 5+ years' experience in a high volume, fast paced packaging or production environment.
  • Experience and working knowledge of 5S, SMED, Gemba walks, LEAN tools, and the DMAIC process.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including relationship management, conflict resolution skills, and technical writing proficiency.
  • Strong leadership skills. Lead by example.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to train others
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage priorities and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to work any shift, as assigned by management.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays, if required by business needs.
  • Able to stand and walk for 8+ hours.
  • Able to lift up to 25 lbs.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Production areas and/ or warehouse setting. Standing or walking for periods of 8 hours or more.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Experience in a cGMP environment preferred. Experience in writing deviations within the pharmaceutical industry is helpful.
